Personal Loan Eligibility Calculator
Estimate how much personal loan you may be eligible for based on your monthly income, existing EMI obligations, and the FOIR (Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio) method — adjusted for the fact that personal loans are unsecured, with a lower FOIR ceiling and a much shorter maximum tenure than secured loans.

What is Personal Loan Eligibility?
A personal loan is unsecured — unlike a home loan or car loan, no asset backs it, so the lender has nothing to repossess if you stop repaying. That single difference reshapes how eligibility is assessed. With no collateral to fall back on, lenders lean much more heavily on your income stability and, especially, your credit score and credit history to judge default risk. As a partial offset to that added risk, lenders typically also cap the FOIR (Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio) — the share of your income allowed toward EMI obligations — lower than they would for a secured loan. This calculator applies the same FOIR method used across Toolbeel Finance's loan eligibility tools, but with bounds tuned to reflect the unsecured nature of a personal loan: a lower FOIR ceiling and a much shorter maximum tenure. It does not model your credit score, employment type, or a specific lender's policy — those factors matter more here than for secured loans, and a lender's actual decision weighs all of them together.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your net monthly income — the amount you actually take home after tax.
- Enter the total of any existing EMIs you're currently paying (other loans, credit cards on EMI, and so on). Leave this at zero if you have none.
- Choose a FOIR assumption. For unsecured personal loans, lenders commonly use somewhere between 40% and 50%, noticeably tighter than for secured loans.
- Enter the interest rate you expect — personal loan rates run higher than secured loans and depend heavily on your credit score.
- Enter the tenure you expect, keeping in mind personal loans are typically capped around 5 years.
- Select "Calculate Eligibility" to see your maximum affordable EMI and the loan amount it can service.
Formula
The first step works out how much EMI your income can support after your existing obligations are accounted for, using a FOIR assumption appropriate for an unsecured loan. The second step then answers "what loan amount, at this rate and tenure, would produce exactly that EMI?" — the mirror image of the standard EMI calculation used on the Personal Loan EMI Calculator.
Example
Consider a net monthly income of ₹70,000, existing EMIs of ₹5,000, a FOIR of 45%, an interest rate of 13% p.a., and a tenure of 4 years (48 months). First, the maximum affordable EMI is (₹70,000 × 45%) − ₹5,000 = ₹31,500 − ₹5,000 = ₹26,500. Next, that ₹26,500 EMI is converted into a loan amount at 13% over 48 months, which works out to an eligible loan amount of approximately ₹9,87,792.53. Enter these same figures into the calculator above to see the identical result.
Important factors
- Credit score plays an outsized role. Because there's no collateral backing an unsecured personal loan, your CIBIL score and credit history weigh heavily on both approval and the interest rate offered. A strong score can unlock a meaningfully lower rate than a borderline one, which directly changes the eligible loan amount this formula produces — the same maximum EMI services a larger principal at a lower rate.
- FOIR is capped more conservatively. Without an asset to recover in case of default, lenders are more cautious about how much of your income they'll let go toward EMIs, which is why the FOIR range used here (commonly 40-50%) sits lower than the range typically used for secured loans.
- Income verifiability matters more. Lenders want to see a stable, verifiable income source. Salaried employees are frequently offered better terms than self-employed applicants, who may face more documentation requirements and a more conservative assessment.
- Tenures are much shorter. Personal loan tenures typically max out around 5 years, compared to up to 30 years for a home loan. A shorter tenure pushes up the EMI required to service a given loan amount, which lowers eligibility for the same income compared to a longer-tenure secured loan.
- This is only an estimate of income-based repayment capacity. It does not model your credit history, which is often the deciding factor for an unsecured loan. Actual approval and the rate offered are determined solely by the lender.
Frequently Asked Questions
A home loan is secured against the property — if repayment fails, the lender can recover value from the asset. A personal loan is unsecured, so there is nothing to repossess if you default. With that safety net gone, lenders lean much more heavily on your credit score and credit history to judge how likely you are to repay, and a weak score can sharply reduce both your eligibility and the interest rate you're offered.
Because there's no collateral backing an unsecured personal loan, lenders build in a bigger safety margin against default by allowing a smaller share of your income to go toward EMIs — commonly 40-50% versus the wider 40-60% (or higher) range sometimes seen for secured loans like home loans. This lower FOIR ceiling is the main reason personal loan eligibility can look more conservative than a home loan eligibility estimate for the same income.
Not usually. Because the loan is unsecured, lenders want confidence in a stable, verifiable income source. Salaried employees typically have straightforward salary slips and employer verification, while self-employed applicants often need to provide additional documentation such as income tax returns and bank statements, and may face a more conservative FOIR or a higher rate as a result. This calculator does not model employment type — it only measures income-based repayment capacity.
Yes — both use the same FOIR (Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio) method to work out a maximum affordable EMI and convert it into a loan amount. This calculator simply applies personal-loan-specific bounds: a lower maximum FOIR and a much shorter maximum tenure (5 years versus up to 30 years), reflecting that personal loans are unsecured and repaid faster.
No. This is only an estimate of income-based repayment capacity using the FOIR method. For an unsecured personal loan, actual approval and the sanctioned amount depend heavily on your credit score and credit history, employment stability, documentation, and the lender's own underwriting process — none of which this calculator models.
