What is the Income Tax Calculator?

This calculator estimates the income tax payable by an individual taxpayer in India for FY 2025-26, based on the tax regime you choose. Since the 2023 Budget, the new tax regime is the default option, but you can still opt for the old regime if its deductions work out better for you. Because the two regimes use different slab rates and allow different deductions, the tax you owe can differ significantly depending on which one you pick — this calculator lets you check both.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select your tax regime — New or Old.
  2. Enter your annual gross income (salary, business income, or other taxable income combined, before any deductions).
  3. If you selected the old regime, choose your age category and enter your Section 80C investments and any other eligible deductions.
  4. Select "Calculate Tax" to see your taxable income, tax payable, and effective tax rate.

Formula

Taxable Income = Gross Income − Standard Deduction − Eligible Deductions (old regime only) Tax = Progressive slab tax on Taxable Income − Section 87A rebate (with marginal relief near the rebate threshold) + Surcharge (for high incomes) + Health & Education Cess (4% of tax + surcharge)

Slab rates, the standard deduction, and the Section 87A rebate threshold differ between the two regimes — see the editorial policy for how these figures are sourced and kept current.

Example

Consider a taxpayer under the new regime with an annual gross income of ₹12,00,000 and no other deductions (the new regime only allows the standard deduction). After the ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income is ₹11,25,000. This falls at or below the ₹12,00,000 rebate threshold used for this estimate together with the slab computation, so the tax works out to nil after the Section 87A rebate. A taxpayer with the same gross income under the old regime, claiming the full ₹1,50,000 Section 80C deduction plus the ₹50,000 standard deduction, would have a taxable income of ₹10,00,000 and a materially different tax outcome — try both in the calculator above to compare.
