What is this calculator?
Since the new tax regime became the default in FY 2023-24, choosing between it and the old regime has become an annual decision for many taxpayers. The right choice depends entirely on how much you can claim in deductions under the old regime — there's no single answer that fits everyone. This calculator runs your numbers through both regimes at once so you can compare directly instead of calculating each separately.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your annual gross income.
- Select your age category (this only changes the old regime's basic exemption limit).
- Enter your Section 80C investments and any other eligible deductions — these apply only to the old regime calculation.
- Select "Compare Regimes" to see a side-by-side breakdown and a recommendation.
Formula
Example
Take a gross annual income of ₹15,00,000. Under the new regime, after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income is ₹14,25,000. Under the old regime, claiming the full ₹1,50,000 Section 80C deduction plus the ₹50,000 standard deduction, taxable income drops to ₹13,00,000 — but is still taxed at the old regime's higher slab rates. Which regime actually comes out cheaper depends on exactly how the numbers play out at your income level, which is exactly why comparing both directly, rather than guessing, is useful.
Factors that affect the comparison
- How much you can claim under the old regime. Section 80C, 80D, HRA exemption (if applicable) and home loan interest can meaningfully lower old-regime taxable income.
- Your income level. At lower incomes, the new regime's higher rebate threshold (₹12,00,000 vs ₹5,00,000) often favors the new regime even with modest old-regime deductions.
- Age category. Senior and super senior citizens get a higher basic exemption under the old regime only, which can shift the comparison in the old regime's favor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not directly — HRA exemption is calculated separately based on your rent, salary structure and city. Use the HRA Calculator to estimate that exemption, then add it to "Other Deductions" here for the old regime comparison.
Taxpayers with business or professional income face restrictions on switching back to the old regime once they've opted for the new one. Salaried individuals without business income generally have more flexibility. Check current rules or consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Section 80C has a statutory cap of ₹1,50,000 per year regardless of how much you actually invest — this calculator applies that cap automatically even if you enter a higher amount.
